Spring 2009 Red Hawks of the Week

Marengo, Ill./Marengo

Jones helped Ripon's women to a fourth place finish at the Midwest Conference Championships over the weekend, as she placed in four individual events and one relay. Jones won the triple jump with a distance of 35-11, while also placing fourth, fifth and sixth in the 400 Intermediate Hurdles, High Jump and 100 High Hurdles, respectively. Her prelim. time of 1:06.02 in the 400 IH broke her own school record my more than one second. Jones was also a part of Ripon's 4x400 Relay team, which finished in eighth place.

Jason Smith
Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Sophomore
Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area

Smith helped the Ripon men's team finish in sixth place at the Midwest Conference Championships over the weekend. The sophomore won the 5000 Meters with a time of 15:09.06, while also finishing fourth in the 1500 Meters with a time of 4:02.88. Both times are personal bests.

Nesbitt finished second in the 400 Meters at Saturday's Badger Open in Madison, Wis., recording a career-best time of 1:05.61. Nesbitt also teamed up with Trisha Jones, Nikki Weichbrod and Brittany Dick to finish third in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:24.75.

Mike Moldenhauer
Men's Golf

Oshkosh, Wis./Liberty (Calif.)

Moldenhauer led Ripon to a sixth place finish at this weekend's MWC Championships. Tied for the tournament lead going into the final round, Moldenhauer shot a two-over par 74 to finish the event in second place individually. He finished with a three round score of 225, which was nine-over par, just three strokes behind the winner of the event.

Geenen led Ripon to wins in all four of its games last week, extending the Red Hawk’s winning streak to nine games. That helped Ripon clinch home field for the 2009 MWC Tournament with a 12-1 conference record, which is the best conference record in school history. In last week's four games, Geenen batted .636
(7-11) with four RBI, six runs scored and three walks. Geenen also hit the 17th home run of her career, which is the second-most in school history. In addition to that, Geenen recorded one triple and stole four bases.

Alex Tande

Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee

Tande helped Ripon earn its first conference victory of the season, winning 5-4 at Beloit College on Sunday. He is the only Ripon player to win both his singles match in Ripon's two matches last week. Against St. Norbert, Tande defeated Nate Tackaberry 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 at the number four flight, before defeating Beloit’s Ben Robinson 6-4, 6-2 at number four singles on Sunday.

Sockness played a huge role in Ripon’s 5-2 record last week, which included a perfect 5-0 record at the Midwest Conference Crossover Tournament for the first time in school history. In the seven games last week, Sockness batted .444 (8-18), which included a double, while also driving in 10 runs, scoring six times and drawing two walks.

Matt Dwyer

Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton

Dwyer played a big role in Ripon's sweep of Lakeland College last week to improve the Red Hawk's record to .500 for the first time this season. In the first game of the doubleheader, Dwyer went
3-for-4 at the plate, including his first triple of the season, while also driving in four runs and scoring two more in Ripon's 10-9 win. He followed that up with a complete game shutout on the mound in game two, striking out nine batters, while walking just one. That 4-0 victory improves Dwyer's season record to 3-0.

Jones had a record-breaking day at Thursday's UW-Whitewater Invitational, which saw her finish in the top two in three different events. Jones won the high jump with a height of 5-01, while finishing second in both the triple jump (35-09.50) and 400 hurdles (1:07.28). Her 400 hurdle time broke a three-year old school record in the event by 0.6 seconds.

Mike Moldenhauer

Oshkosh, Wis./Liberty (Calif.)

Moldenhauer tied for a tournament-best 153 at the Ripon Invitational over the weekend. He then went on to win a scorecard playoff to secure the individual trophy. Moldenhauer shot a first round 78, before shooting a 75 on the second and final day of the tournament to help Ripon take third place out of seven teams.

Baerenwald had a career day at Saturday's UW-Oshkosh Invitational. The freshman broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 45-07.75. That tops Ripon's previous best by three feet and is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. That throw is the second-best shot put performance in the country this season.

Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie

Schara helped Ripon complete Saturday’s doubleheader sweep at Lawrence University, going 2-for-4 at the plate in the second game of the day. Both of Schara’s hits found their way over the fence, with his second home run, a two-run shot in the top of the ninth, giving the Red Hawks a 6-3 lead. Ripon would go on to win the game 6-4.

Jones had an outstanding start to the 2009 outdoor track & field season at Saturday's Sherman-Lukoski Invitational in Ripon. She helped Ripon to a third-place finish with first place performances in the high jump (4-09.50), triple jump (30-04.50) and 400 hurdles (1:12.37). In addition to that, Jones also placed second in both the 100 hurdles (17.65) and the 4x400 relay, which ran a time of 4:55.63.

Andrew Handeland

Handeland played a key role in Ripon's first place finish at Saturday's Sherman-Lukoski Invite at Ingalls Field. Handeland was a part of three first-place finishes. He won a pair of individual events, finishing first in the 100 (11.48) and 200 (23.27), while also running the opening leg on the winning 4x100 relay team, which finished with a time of 45.16.

Geenen got the season off to a hot start, batting .500 (11-22) in seven games last week. Eight of her 11 hits went for extra bases, including five doubles and three triples. The Senior shortstop also scored nine runs, while recording six RBI.

Whitty started all 10 games during Ripon's spring trip to Florida. In those games, he batted .310 (9-29) with two doubles and six RBI, while also scoring four runs. On defense, Whitty threw out seven of 12 base runners from his catcher position.

Knorr played a big role in Ripon's first win of the season in Sunday's 5-0 win over Pine Manor (Mass.). Against the Gators, Knorr pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters. She followed that up with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate in a 5-2 loss to Farleigh Dickinson-Fordham (N.J.). That included the first home run of her career, a lead-off inside the parker in the fourth inning. Against FDU, Knorr also pitched one inning of relief, which saw her retire every batter she faced, including two via strike outs.

Kurt Roeder

Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam

Roeder was a key to Ripon's first victory of the season on Sunday. In the second game of Ripon's doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson (Penn.), Roeder's RBI triple in the Red Hawk's five-run third inning sparked their 8-5 victory. He also picked up his first save of the season in that game, allowing zero hits in 0.2 innings. In his only other action of the weekend, Roeder went 1-for-5 against Denison (Ohio), while also pitching 1.1 innings of hitless ball in relief in Ripon's 6-5 loss to the Big Red to open the season.
