Fall 2009 Red Hawks of the Week

Sussex, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran

Matter broke her career-best time at Saturday's NCAA Regional meet in Oshkosh, Wis., running the 6K race in 23:09, which is the third-fastest 6K time in Ripon history. That time was good enough for 52nd out of 273 individuals and helped the Red Hawks finish 22nd out of 45 teams at the meet.

Grand Marsh, Wis./Adams-Friendship

Zimmerman ran a career-best time of 27:42 at Saturday's NCAA Division III Regional meet in Oshkosh, Wis. That placed him 162nd out of 282 runners in the 8K meet and helped the Red Hawks finish 19th out of 44 teams.

Schalla took first place in both the 200 yard IM and 100 yard breaststroke at Friday’s Ripon Invitational. She swam a time of 2:29.02 in the 200 IM, while finishing with a time of 1:16.67 in the 100 breaststroke. The Red Hawks narrowly lost the event, 99-93 against Beloit College.

Brandon Taylor

Sophomore
Union, Ore./LaGrand

In his only two individual events at Friday’s Ripon Invitational, Ripon’s Brandon Taylor finished in first place. The sophomore won the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly with times of 23.93 and 59.42, respectively, which helped the Red Hawks defeat Beloit 93-72.His 100 butterfly time was eight seconds better than the second-place swimmer.

Davey became the third runner in Ripon history to earn First Team All-Conference honors four times in her career. She finished ninth out of 126 runners at at Saturday's Midwest Conference Championships with a 6K time of 25:01, helping the Red Hawks to a sixth place finish.

Niagra, Wis./Niagra

Thew helped lead Ripon to a second place finish at Saturday's Midwest Conference Championships, marking the highest finish at the conference meet in program history. Thew finished 15th overall out of 132 runners, with an 8K time of 28:16. That earned him a spot on the MWC First Team All-Conference team.

Ernst helped Ripon to a three-set victory over Lake Forest College in their only conference game last week.  The Red Hawks lost their other two matches of the week at Saturday’s Wisconsin Lutheran Triangular. In a five-set loss to Concordia (WI), Ernst recorded a career-high 48 assists. In the three matches combined, Ernst recorded 109 assists (9.1 assists per set). She also added a combined eight kills and 20 digs.

Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep

Miller led the Red Hawks with 141 rushing yards and two touchdowns during Saturday’s 41-28 loss at St. Norbert. That included a long of 33 yards and an average of 6.4 yards per carry. The junior quarterback also completed 6-of-16 passes for 41 yards.

Seering competed in the cross country and short track events at the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships over the weekend. She finished in 15th and 17th place, respectively, as a part of Ripon's first-ever representation at the National meet.

Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area

Jason Smith eclipsed his previous career high by one second at Saturday's Wisconsin Private College Championships, helping the Red Hawks win the event for the third consecutive season. Smith's time of 26:11 was Ripon's top time and was the third-best time at the meet out of 104 competitors, earning him First Team All-State honors.

Davey finished second overall out of 44 competitors at Saturday’s Ripon Invitational. That helped the Red Hawks win the event, thanks to her 5K time of 20:28.

Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Lab School

Worcester helped Ripon to a second place finish at Saturday's Ripon Invitational. The junior ran an 8K time of 26:41, which was good enough for fourth place out of 65 runners that finished the race and just five seconds behind the second-place finisher.

Martzahl led Ripon to its first win of the season Saturday in a 1-0 win over St. Norbert. Martzahl netted the only goal of the game, in the ninth minute, helping the Red Hawks defeat the Green Knights for the first time in 33 all-time meetings.
 
 

Andy Ayers

Eagle River, Wis./Three Lakes

Andy Ayers won both the Men's C cross country race and the short track cross country race to earn the individual conference championship in both events. He also competed in his first downhill event as well as the dual slalom. He was the only Red Hawk to compete in all four events this weekend. His efforts resulted in 166 points for Ripon and further secured the Division Two Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference championship.

Appleton, Wis./Appleton East

Peterson shot a career-low round of 82 at Tuesday’s St. Norbert Invitational, earning her the medalist position at the event. That topped her previous career-low by seven strokes. She followed that up with a team-best 90 during Sunday's first round of the Viterbo Invitational.

DePere, Wis./DePere

Faulds sealed Ripon's 14-0 victory at Illinois College in dramatic fashion, returning an interception 100 yards for a touchdown with 17 seconds remaining. That ties the longest play in Ripon football history, while also securing Ripon's second consecutive shutout. Faulds is a big part of the defense, which hasn't allowed a point in 11 quarters. In addition to his big play, Faulds also recorded two tackles (both solo) and broke up two passes against the Blueboys.

Heim put a permanant mark on the Ripon College volleyball program on Friday, breaking the school record for digs in a career. With 12 digs against Maranatha Baptist, Heim broke Sara Sanford's record of 2,058 digs, which was set from 2002-05. For the week, Heim recorded 124 digs in six matches (20.7 digs per match). She now has 2,118 career digs, with at least 12 matches left in her career.
 
 

Ryan Andersen

Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's

Andersen led the Red Hawks defense to a shutout in Saturday's 47-0 victory over Knox College. He was a big reason the Prairie Fire gained just 88 yards in the game, which is the third-lowest yardage total allowed in Ripon history. Andersen recorded a team-high 11 tackles (7 solo), while also forcing one fumble.

Deans was 2-0 in singles play last week at the number four flight. Against Mount Mary College on Wednesday, Deans defeated Megan Herdeman 6-1, 6-2, before defeating St. Norbert’s Erin Riutta 6-4, 6-0 on Saturday. Deans also teamed with Megan Sockness against Mount Mary's in number two doubles to defeat Mount Mary’s Herdeman and Brittany Kaurich 8-2.

Appleton, Wis./Appleton East

Drexler played a role in four of Ripon’s five goals last week, as he scored three, while assisting on another. That helped Ripon go
1-1 in their two games, including a 3-0 win against Lake Forest in their conference opener, which saw Drexler score two goals.

Racing in her first-ever collegiate race, Matter finished with Ripon’s top time, coming in fifth place at Saturday’s Tom Barry Invitational, hosted by St. Norbert College. Matter’s time of 19:58 helped the Red Hawks to a fourth place finish out of 12 teams in the collegiate division.

Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville

Felten finished in a career-best 13th place at Saturday’s Tom Barry Invite, hosted by St. Norbert College. Felten ran a time of 22:15, helping the Red Hawks to a third-place finish out of 10 teams in the collegiate division.

Smith finished Saturday's race at Butler University with two first-place finishes in two very different disciplines. He convincingly captured first place in the Men's B cross country race, crossing the finish line nearly one and half minutes ahead of Missouri's Brent Davidson. He followed that up with a first place finish in the B downhill by one second, riding his cross country bike down the gnarly decent. Smith also added a third and fourth place finish in Sunday's Men's B Short Track Cross Country and Mountain Cross races, respectively.
