EC.72.38 Denomination: as Date: c. 54-68 CE Obverse: Laureate head facing right Inscription: NERO CAESAR AUG GERM IMPSupplied: Nero Caesar Augustus Germanicus Imperator Translated: Nero Caesar Augustus Germanicus Emperor Notes: "The great-great grandson of Augustus, Nero was adopted by the emperor Claudius and given the throne over Claudius' real son Britannicus, who was murdered in 55 CE. Nero lived a dissolute life. His first wife, Octavia, was murdered by his mistress Poppaea Sabina. Then, his mistress was later murdered with Nero's knowledge. Nero was also considered to be a very odd ruler. He was rumored to have set fire to parts of the city, and publicly shocked the people of Rome by appearing on stage and singing to an audience. Nero's fall from power was a true soap opera. He had many enemies, and they plotted to assassinate him to replace him with Gaius Calpurnius Piso, but Nero had all of the members killed. After he toured Greece, the people lost hope in the Emperor, and, after a revolt, the Senate had the means to dispose of Nero. Feeling that his time as a ruler was over, Nero committed suicide on 9 June 68 CE." -Andy Capes, Class of 2002 |
