Ripon College Wins Ethics Bowl
After a weekend of competition, Ripon College captured the championship in the Upper Midwest Regional Ethics Bowl (UMREB). Ripon’s Ethical Leadership Program Ethics Bowl teams traveled to Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois to compete in the annual event. Ripon’s two teams went 4-0 and 3-1 against teams that included the University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University, Valparaiso, Hiram College, Illinois Institute of Technology and Loyola University.
As the UMREB Champions the Ripon College teams secured a spot in the 17th Annual Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, February 28, 2013. Ripon College will compete against other qualifying colleges and universities from across the nation and around the world.
The Ripon teams were composed of students Sophia Kaounas, Charlotte Lee, Kyle Ruedinger, Ariel Berres-Green, Scott Hetzel, Alexandra Martin, Amy Reuling, Paul Meuer and Honey Zaw. They were led by faculty advisors Lindsay Blumer and Deano Pape, with assistance from Allison Schmidt and Rachel Wedeward.
“The Ethics Bowl is a great way for students to experience ethical decision making and test out what they’re learning in their classes and beyond,” said Lindsay Blumer, Director of Ripon’s Ethical Leadership Program. “It challenges students to think critically about the gray areas of social, political, academic, environmental and other issues while having a great time and developing friendships and connections that will last well after college.”
According to the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, organizers of this national competition, in an Ethics Bowl “each team receives a set of cases which raise issues in practical and professional ethics in advance of the competition and prepare an analysis of each case.” Teams then respond to a moderator’s questions and are evaluated on “intelligibility, focus on ethically relevant considerations, avoidance of ethical irrelevance, and deliberative thoughtfulness.”

2nd place: Loyola University Chicago (A) 4-0
3rd place: Loyola University Chicago (B) 3-0-1
4th place: Harper College 3-1
