Ripon Run/Walk Set for May

runadamrunThe ninth annual Ripon College/Ripon Community (RC2) Run/Walk is set for Saturday, May 4. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. with races starting at 8 a.m. Ripon Medical Center is returning as the event sponsor again this year, enabling race staff to offer electronic chip timing to the race.

All proceeds support projects that help build the lives of Ripon children and others, including a children’s fair, toy lending library, and iPads and applications for autism therapy.

Participants can choose from a half marathon, 10K or 5K race. Each race will begin and end in downtown Ripon and wind through the city of Ripon. The 10K and half marathon courses also extend to the surrounding countryside with plenty of scenic roads.

The registration cost for all races is $35 through April 1 and $40 from April 2 until race day. Dri-Fit T-shirts are included in the registration fee. Registration is available on-line at www.ripon.edu/RC2.

This year’s event features a new team challenge. Team captains can create a team for $10. Members can register for their team of choice and compete for bragging rights and a team prize. The top three racers of each team will be used in scoring.

Joe Hatcher, professor of psychology at Ripon College, founded the event in 2004 as part of a class he teaches on motivation. Students who are training for the race this semester are enrolled in an exercise science class taught by Hatcher. Every year students utilize the theories of motivation taught in these courses as they train for the event. Hatcher has over 90 students enrolled in his class this semester, but the participation of Kiwanis signals growing community involvement.

The Ripon Noon Kiwanis Club and the Ripon College Office of Community Engagement are collaborating to plan the event.
