Acclaimed jazz performers at Ripon College

Matt UleryThe Matt Ulery Group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in C. J. Rodman Center for the Arts on the Ripon College campus. The performance is presented as part of the Chamber Music and Jazz at Ripon Series.

Ulery, a Chicago-based bassist and composer, has been performing since age 14. He plays many styles of music, including the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop, gospel, theatre and folk — specifically American, South American, Balkan and other European folk styles.

Ulery will be appearing with an eight-piece group, performing music from his acclaimed 2012 album “By a Little Light.” The album has received great acclaim, including being named among the Top 50 Favorite Albums of 2012 (all genres) by NPR Music; the Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2012 by NPR’s A Blog Supreme; and the Top 10 Albums of 2012 by the Chicago Tribune.

A Chicago Tribune review described the album as “one of the most hauntingly beautiful recordings of this year – or any other. This magical profoundly musical release embraces more aesthetic influences than one might have though a cohesive recording could.”

Ticket prices are $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens and Ripon College faculty and staff; $8 for students 18 and younger; and free for Ripon College students. For more ticket information, call Jean Hooker at (920) 748-8791.
