Guest pianist Blair McMillen to perform at Ripon College

BlairMcMillen2Pianist Blair McMillen will perform at Ripon College Feb. 14 as part of the Chamber Music and Jazz at Ripon series. The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts.

His program, “Legacy of the American Piano: Contrasts and Currents,” will feature American piano music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Composers will include Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, John Cage and Morton Feldman.

McMillen has established himself as one of the most versatile and sought-after pianists today. Dedicated to new and groundbreaking projects, he is committed to performing contemporary music. Known for adventurous and imaginative programming, he has premiered hundreds of solo and chamber works.

The New York Times has described him as “riveting,” “prodigiously accomplished and exciting,” and as one of the piano’s “brilliant stars.”

Recent appearances include Carnegie Hall, as soloist with the American Symphony Orchestra, Bang on a Can’s 25th anniversary marathon, Miller Theatre’s “Piano Revolution” series, the Moscow Conservatory, the Metropolitan Museum and CalArts.

McMillen leads a multifarious musical life as pianist, chamber musician, conductor, and improviser. He plays a vast variety of musical styles from medieval keyboard manuscripts to improvisation-based music of all types.

A self-taught jazz pianist, he regularly is involved in improvisation projects ranging from the straight-ahead to the avant-garde. He resides in New York City and serves on the piano faculty at Bard College and Conservatory.
