Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs April 13
The Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by Carl Rath, will perform Sunday, April 13. The concert will begin at 3:15 p.m. in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, on the Ripon College campus. Admission to the concert is free.
Rath conducted the college band in 1980-81 before leaving for the University of Oklahoma and a tenure-track position in bassoon. After 31 years there, he retired and returned to Wisconsin to teach at Lawrence University in Appleton, where he taught bassoon and popular-music courses in rock-and-roll and the Beatles.
Since this year is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ achieving world-wide fame, the Ripon College band will perform a medley of some of the Beatles’ hits, including “Yesterday,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Ticket to Ride” and more. The medley features Christian Calkins ’17 of Palmer, Alaska, as Ringo Starr.
Other concert selections include “Americans We,” a march by Henry Fillmore, “Festival Prelude,” by Alfred Reed, “Longing For Sunrise,” by Daniel Baldwin, “impulse,” by Bradley Meholick; and “Film Music Suite,” by Francis Clifford. Soloists will include Zach Conners ’15 of Hollandale, Wis., on flute; Alex Patza ’15 of Shiocton, Wis., on alto sax; Sophie Klingenberger ’14 of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on horn; and Noah DeBruyn ’17 of Green Bay Wis., on oboe.
“Film Music Suite” is a crowd-pleaser in four movements, each of which highlights a different type of music used in films. “Horror” brings to mind the music heard in early classics, such as “Frankenstein.” “Romance” is very melodic and touches the heart. “Comedy” sounds like circus music, and “Adventure” will bring to mind the music heard in Indiana Jones films.
