Installation exhibit by artist Liz Miller opens Oct. 28

“Palatial Remix,” an installation exhibit by Minnesota artist Liz Miller, will run Oct. 28 through Dec. 9 in Caestecker Gallery, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, at Ripon College. An artist talk will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 in Demmer Recital Hall, followed by a reception in the gallery.

Miller creates abstract installations in art galleries from paper, plastic, cloth and other materials. Her recent wall-based fiber works and installation environments explore architecture, boundaries and borders through the juxtaposition of architectural fragments and fiber-based adornment.

“Pieces of the built environment, such as components of fences, gutter guards, or metal remnants of domestic interiors (such as stove grates) become armatures for ad-hoc weaving, knotting and embellishment with rope, cord and other textile materials,” she says.

She is creating a new installation for Ripon College.

Miller’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. Her awards include a McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Fiber Artists, a McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant, and several Artist Initiative Grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Miller has completed residencies at MASS MoCA (North Adams, Massachusetts), Stove Works (Chattanooga, Tennessee), the Joan Mitchell Center (New Orleans, Louisiana) and the McColl Center for Art + Innovation (Charlotte, North Carolina).

Miller received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota.

She is a professor of installation and drawing at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and lives in Good Thunder, Minnesota.
