Madigan named Midwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Year

RIPON, Wisconsin – Another major accolade has been awarded to Cormac Madigan, Ripon College Class of 2023, to add to his lengthy collegiate resume. Monday, he was named the 2023 Midwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for Men’s Sports.

This represents the top male student-athlete in all sports from throughout the Midwest Conference in terms of athleticism, academics and community involvement. This is the first time a Red Hawks student-athlete has been selected for this honor.

Madigan was a standout performer in the College’s football and baseball programs and one of the most decorated athletes in school history. A graduate of Laconia High School in Rosendale, Wisconsin, he recently wrapped up his collegiate career with his name well-distributed throughout the school’s record books. On the gridiron, Madigan holds six school records: career rushing yards, career points, career rushing touchdowns, career all-purpose yards, rushing touchdowns in one game and pass completions in one game. He helped lead Ripon to a 9-1 season in 2022 and a share of the Midwest Conference championship for the first time since 2001, and was selected as the 2022 Midwest Conference Offensive Skill MVP and the 2018 Midwest Conference North Division Newcomer of the Year.

Throughout his time with the program, Madigan’s impressive performance on the field earned him a spot on the postseason All-Midwest Conference team four consecutive seasons – 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

Head Football Coach Jake Marshall says, “Cormac has consistently demonstrated attributes that have separated him from everyone else. His tireless work ethic has shown time and time again on the field, in the weight room, and most importantly in the classroom. The awards are numerous, but for Cormac it’s always been about others. He cares about those around him far more than himself and has proven himself a great leader, and a better person. Our program is far better because of the impact he’s had, not just in touchdowns and rushing yards, but for the example he has set for generations of Red Hawks to come.”

On the baseball diamond, Madigan was an All-Midwest Conference second-team outfielder in 2022, setting the school record for single-season games played (43 in 2023) and single-season at-bats (186 in 2022). Madigan’s 65 hits in 2022, his first season playing collegiate baseball, place him fifth in program history for single-season hits.

Just as impressive are Madigan’s successes in the classroom and in the community. A chemistry-biology major, Madigan graduated from Ripon with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average, earning him recognition as the 2022 College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Division III Football Team Member of the Year, the 2022 MWC Football Elite 20 award winner as the student-athlete with the highest GPA in their sport throughout the conference, and a member of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Division III Academic All-American Third Team in 2022 and 2023.

He also served as a member of the Ripon College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC,) was involved in the Orientation Committee and served as the vice president and philanthropy and community service chair of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Within the greater Ripon community, Madigan worked with the Ripon Food Pantry, Murray Park Elementary School, the Ripon Fire Department and the Salvation Army. He also tutored students on campus, helped move College employees into and out of their homes and assisted with football and baseball camps on campus.

Director of Athletics Chris Schumacher adds, “Cormac represents the essence of the total student-athlete experience in Division III and Ripon College athletics. His name is synonymous with academic and athletic excellence as he joins our storied history of high- achieving undergraduates whom Ripon helped prepare to make a significant positive difference in the world.”

Madigan says, “Receiving this prestigious honor is a testament to the immense support and opportunities offered by the Ripon College community, enabling individuals to reach their fullest potential. I am grateful for the exceptional professors and coaches who guided me, as well as the unwavering support from my teammates and peers throughout my time here. It’s the perfect way to close out my career at Ripon College.”

Madigan majored in chemistry-biology at Ripon and has been accepted into the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
