Professor of Art Mollie Oblinger has work in solo exhibit in Oshkosh

“Prolonged Current,” a solo exhibit of artwork by Professor of Art Mollie Oblinger, is on view through Feb. 29 at Annex Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The gallery is located in Room N204 on the second floor of the Arts and Communication Center.
“The artworks in this exhibit form a portrait of the evolving ecosystem of the Great Lakes,” Oblinger says in the exhibit statement. “Silhouettes of nonnative species, the lakes, and the boundaries of the watershed are cut from synthetic fabrics. Layered together atop drooping domes/globes, the shapes become further abstracted. In a way, this distortion mirrors changes in our watershed as new species continually affect the balance.”
The three artworks from 2019 in this exhibit were created in collaboration with writer C. Kubasta. Oblinger says extracted words and lines of poetry from Kubasta’s book “Of Covenants,” weave their way into sculptures. Oblinger designed the cover for the book and some of the poems were a result of their conversations on water and the Midwest.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday; and 2-4 p.m. Saturday.
Also this semester, Oblinger and her ART 292 (Sculpture II) students are working with individuals at Diverse Options in Ripon to support the creation of artworks; and her CTL 220 (Art & Environment) students are working with the Green Lake Association. The course is exploring the use of art and design to educate the public about environmental issues. Group projects during the second half of the semester will focus on issues central to the Green Lake Association’s mission.
