Zachary Morris ’02 named chair of the UW Department of Human Oncology

Zachary Morris ’02 has been named chair of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Human Oncology. A leading expert on innovative approaches to cancer therapy, Morris is a radiation oncologist at UW Health and an associate professor of human oncology.

He joined the faculty in 2016 and two years later was selected as department vice chair, contributing to departmental strategic planning for faculty recruitment, physician compensation planning, diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, operational planning for the UW Health Eastpark Medical Center facility slated to open in fall 2024, and more.

“Our school’s strengths in medical physics, radiology and immunology complement my research interests, while the historic and growing strength of the Department of Human Oncology provides an environment that is second to none for our faculty, students and patients,” Morris says. “Advancing this legacy is my top priority, and I feel a deep sense of commitment to growing the stature of the department by advancing patient care, scholarship and research.”

Morris was Ripon College’s honorary degree recipient in 2023. While a student at Ripon, he majored in chemistry and biology with a minor in Latin. He was named a prestigious Goldwater Scholar in 2001 and in 2002 was one of the select 32 Americans named a Rhodes Scholar, which included study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He is one of three Rhodes Scholars named in the 172-year history of Ripon College.
