Kaleb Schroeder to perform senior vocal recital Nov. 23

Kaleb Schroeder of Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, is performing his senior tenor vocal recital in the Benstead Theatre of the C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts at Ripon College Saturday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m.

He will be accompanied by Adjunct Instructor of Music Deb MacKenzie on piano. Admission is free and open to the public.

“My recital is a blend of classical and contemporary music, showcasing pieces in German, French and English,” Schroeder said. “I’ll perform works by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Reynaldo Hahn, as well as iconic selections from musical theater. It’s a journey through different musical styles and emotions, offering something for everyone to connect with.”

Schroeder is majoring in chemistry-biology and minoring in music. Although performing a recital is not required as a music minor, he wanted to create a program that reflects his diverse musical experiences and personal connections.

“The classical pieces highlight my vocal training and love for art song, while the contemporary selections represent my broader musical interests, including songs that hold sentimental value, like Adele’s ‘Hometown Glory’ and ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz,” Schroeder said. “Each piece was chosen to challenge me technically and expressively while allowing me to share something meaningful with an audience.”

He likes to think of the recital as a culmination of his journey as a music minor and years of vocal study.

“It’s a celebration of the growth I’ve experienced as a singer and student, blending the various aspects of my life,” Schroeder said.

Schroeder said he’s thankful to Ripon College for the opportunities he’s been able to pursue as a pre-med student, a musician and a collegiate soccer player and captain.

“Not all institutions would work so hard to ensure that students can be involved in so many things at once,” Schroeder said. “Performing these pieces feels like a reflection of who I’ve become and the support I’ve received from my mentors, family and friends.”

Schroeder said this recital is a chance for people to experience music that moves across genres and languages, an opportunity to support the arts and a time to celebrate the power of music and how it connects us.

“I’d just like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey, especially Dr. Erin Bryan (associate professor of music), for her guidance and encouragement, and Deb MacKenzie, for enhancing this recital with her incredible talent as a collaborator,” Schroeder said. “I hope this recital resonates with the audience as much as these pieces have with me, and I’m excited to share this with everyone.”
