Lucie Petri-Rose of Omro, Wisconsin, is performing her senior mezzo-soprano vocal recital in Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon College’s C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts Saturday, April 12 at 3:15 p.m.

She will be accompanied by Adjunct Instructor of Music Deb MacKenzie, piano; junior Ayanna Jorgenson, soprano; local musician Rob Milanowski, drums; senior Ruth Roltgen, trumpet; retired Director of Liturgy and Music at Holy Family Parish Paul Thelen, piano; and Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Paul Thompson, bass. Admission is free and open to the public.

“My recital is a one-hour show featuring all of the advancements I have made in the past four years of my education here at Ripon College,” Petri-Rose said. “I will be performing pieces from various composers, including Clara and Robert Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Strauss, Bizet and more.”

She also will be performing jazz standards, such as “In A Sentimental Mood,” “I Fall In Love Too Easily” and “Bye Bye Blackbird.”

Petri-Rose said her senior recital is a big “stepping stone” in her college career, hopefully leading her to new opportunities beyond college.

“This recital means the world to me,” Petri-Rose said. “I have worked incredibly hard to make this recital happen and to be the most prepared I can be for it.”

Petri-Rose said when she was younger she was discouraged by peers and mentors for being unable to read music. She said if anyone else has struggled with this, it shouldn’t hold them back from enjoying beautiful music.

“I want people to feel that they can come and appreciate music without being made to feel stupid for not always understanding the nuances like I was made to feel growing up,” Petri-Rose said. “I want this to be an accessible and enjoyable experience for all.”

Petri-Rose would like to thank the music faculty and her family for supporting her along the way.

“I especially want to thank Dr. Thompson for allowing me to explore jazz and Dr. [Erin] Bryan [Associate Professor of Music and Voice Area Coordinator] for helping me master the classical world of music,” Petri-Rose said. “My husband, Riley, has never even once doubted my goals and dreams. My family back home are my biggest fans, and I couldn’t be more grateful to God for opening this opportunity for me these past four years. I will forever be grateful for Ripon College and what it has allowed me to become.”

Petri-Rose is majoring in music and minoring in theatre and has been involved with singing most of her life through choirs and musicals.
