Symphonic Wind Ensemble to perform concert Nov. 9

The Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble will present a fall concert, Sunday, Nov. 9, at 3:15 p.m., in Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon College’s C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts.

Admission is free and open to the public. Assistant Professor of Music and Fine Arts Coordinator Tobin Shucha is the conductor.

“It’s really exciting when the ensemble — not just the students that make it up but the collective — move from playing notes and rhythms into making music together,” Shucha said. “It never fails to get me excited for the chance to share our music with an audience.”

Selections include “Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa, “Fairest of the Renaissance Faire” by Erika Svanoe, “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Florentiner March” by Julius Fučík, “Autumn” by Cait Nishimura and “Pines of the Appian Way” by Ottorino Respighi.

Shucha said he encourages people to come see and hear “some awesome live music.”

“The Svanoe piece is composed in the style of two famous band pieces of Renaissance music, but using the melodic material from the Sousa piece we play immediately before it,” Shucha said. “The Fučík and Respighi are crowd favorites.”
