Harriet Hemans Brown

Class of 1867: First graduating class

Harriet Hemans Brown was one of the four members of the first graduation class of 1867 at Ripon College.

She was born Oct. 21, 1840, in South Shaftsbury, Vermont, and came to Wisconsin in 1846, Coming from her home in Lamartine, Wisconsin, she studied in the scientific course at Ripon College. She taught in Rosendale, Wisconsin, in 1868 and in Baraboo, Wisconsin, from 1872-1876. She then took care of her parents and occupied herself with painting.

She died in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Sept. 3, 1893, of heart disease.
