Opening Reception and Artist Talk with Milwaukee-Based Interdisciplinary Artist

Ripon College’s Caestecker Gallery is pleased to present Closer to the Truth, a solo exhibition of new work by Phoenix S. Brown, an interdisciplinary artist and musician based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The exhibition will open with a public reception on February 27th, followed by an artist talk with Brown at 7 pm in Demmer Recital Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Brown earned her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, with a minor in art history. Brown’s work has garnered regional and national recognition. She is the recipient of the 2024 Wisconsin Emerging Artist Achievement Award and a 2021 gener8tor Art grant. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Wright Museum of Art and the Trout Museum of Art. Brown’s paintings and drawings have also been presented at NADA Miami, The Other Art Fair Chicago, and Untitled Art Fair Miami Beach. Her work has also been featured in the journal New American Paintings. More recently, she was awarded the Ruth Arts + MIAD Artist Grant to support Realms of Unbecoming, a new body of work.

Brown also works as curator at the Bronzeville Center for the Arts (BCA), a nonprofit organization rooted in the art, culture, and history of the African Diaspora in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In her upcoming exhibition at Ripon College, Brown constructs a landscape where personal mythologies unfold, shaped by serpentine forms, symbolic gates, and shaped canvases.
