Diverse activities celebrate diversity during LGBT month

LGBT History Month is being held at Ripon College to promote diversity on campus. Highlights include:

Diversity poster campaign, identifying racial, disability, gender, historical and celebrity figures in the LGBT community.

Oct. 6: Safe zone training, 5 p.m. in Great Hall. Introductory workshop for people who care about diversity, equality and inclusion to learn how to become allies to the LGBT community, learn terminology and concepts and how to combat phobias in daily life.

Oct. 7: “Don’t Tell Anyone,” a 1998 film based on the alleged autobiography of gay Peruvian talk show host Jaime Bailey, will screen at 6:30 p.m. in Bear Auditorium. The screening is sponsored by La Unida.

Oct. 10: Transgender comedian Jeffrey Jay, 7 p.m., The Pub.

Oct. 13: “Hidden Voice: The lives of LGBT Muslims,” 11:15 a.m. in Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall. The speaker, Faisal Alam, is a queer Muslim activist of Pakistani descent.

Oct. 13: “Gay Marriage and Religious Freedom,” 4 p.m., Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall. Panel discussion about the religious, moral and political implications of the recent Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. The focus will be on what the decision entails for both LGBT rights and the religious freedom of those who oppose it on moral or religious grounds.

Oct. 13: “Asexuality 101,” 5 p.m., PDR. Introductory workshop.

Oct. 28: Queer ASL workshop, 4 p.m. in MLK Lounge, Harwood Memorial Union. Hosted by Hayden Kristal, a deaf, transgender drag queen, about sign language used to talk about LGBT identities.

Oct. 30: “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” film showing, 8 p.m., Great Hall. Sing, dance, say the lines and have some Halloween fun to end LGBT History Month!
