Community/College panel will address hunger in the Ripon area Nov. 19

Hunger in Ripon and Beyond: A Panel Discussion will be presented Thursday, Nov. 19, by the Sociology Club of Ripon College. The discussion will begin at 7 p.m. in Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall, on the Ripon College campus. The discussion is free, and all are welcome to attend.

The panel will discuss how poverty and hunger affect the city of Ripon and surrounding communities. The presenters will include the following community members and Ripon College professors who will speak about research on and interactions with those struggling to find enough to eat:

  • Amy Pollesch, director of the Ripon Food Pantry
  • Cindy Hayes Diemer, vice president of the League of Women Voters (Ripon chapter), and a 1973 alumna of Ripon College
  • Josh Filler, assistant professor of philosophy at Ripon College
  • David William Scott, assistant professor of religion and Pieper Chair of Servant Leadership at Ripon College
  • The “Hunger in Ripon and Beyond” panel discussion is the culminating event of the Sociology Club’s month-long effort to increase awareness of hunger on global, national, state and local levels. Globally, undernourishment kills millions of children each year, while here in the United States 14 percent of homes were “food insecure” in 2014, meaning these families were unsure if they would have enough to eat.

Right here in Wisconsin, one in eight residents struggle with hunger, and this trend is apparent in our own community, where the Ripon Food Pantry serves 100-200 families per month. To help these families, the Sociology Club is running a food drive that ends on Dec. 2. More than 125 items have been donated already, and the food drive is on pace to reach its goal of 500 items for the Ripon Food Pantry.

Donations of non-perishable items will be collected at the panel discussion on Nov. 19. Items most needed include: peanut butter, canned tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, rice, pasta, soup/stew/chili, cereal, oatmeal, canned meats, boxed meals (such as Hamburger Helper), applesauce, raisins, graham crackers, and granola bars.
