Black History Month celebration begins Feb. 1

Ripon College’s celebration of Black History Month begins Feb. 1. The theme is Know Your Rights. Key events will be:

  • Feb. 1: Free brochures explaining your rights in the state of Wisconsin will be distributed at various times and locations throughout the day.
  • Feb. 10: “Working Our Intersections …”, 5 p.m. in the Dahm Heritage Room, S.N. Pickard Commons. The Rev. Benjamin Ledell Reynolds, assistant director of recruitment, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, will share some of his passions related to diversity, culture, differences and the seminary, while highlighting the variety of master’s of divinity degrees offered at Garrett. This is co-hosted by Center for Diversity & Inclusion and the Office of Constituent Engagement & Career Services.
  • Feb. 11: “They Shoot Black People, Don’t They? A Cartoonist’s look at Police Brutality,” 7 p.m. in Todd Wehr 104. This is a PowerPoint slideshow from nationally syndicated cartoonist Keith Knight (the Knight Life, the K Chronicles, (th)ink). Presenting his unique take on the militarization of the nation’s police force, and the unchecked killing of unarmed citizens, Knight’s cartoons are infused with urgency, humor, satire, politics and race. His work is designed to provoke constructive, civil dialogue among people young and old, left and right, of all colors and orientations.
  • Feb. 15: Voter informational, 5 p.m. in the Pickard Dining Room, Commons. Don’t know how to vote, let alone whom to vote for? This event will inform you of all views and sides of important political issues and let you leave prepared and informed. This is co-sponsored with La Unida.
  • Feb. 16: Diversity Town Hall, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at The Pub. Key stakeholders at the College are invited to hear what students have to say about diversity initiatives and efforts.
  • Feb. 17: “Straight Talk,” 5:15 a.m. in room B12, S.N. Pickard Commons. This will be a know-your-rights question-and-answer session.
  • Feb. 20: Black Student Union and Ripon Live present: “Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom,” 7 p.m. in Bear Auditorium, Farr Hall. This movie is about the remarkable life of South African revolutionary, president and world icon Nelson Mandela.
  • Feb. 24: Black Student Union elections, 5:15 p.m. in room B12, Commons. All executive board positions in the Black Student Union need to be filled for the 2016-2017 year. Consider running for president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, public relations chair, historian or diplomat. Join us for this meeting to vote or run for a position.
  • Feb. 25: Open Mic Night, 7 p.m., 314 Project Space at 314 Watson St., downtown Ripon. Poetry, spoken word, music, comedy, you name it — all will be done. Come to watch or to participate.
