Evelyn Kain’s work to be featured at alumna’s gallery in Madison starting May 6

Professor of Art Emerita Evelyn Kain will have work shown beginning Friday, May 6, at Bare Knuckle Arts, 1949 Winnebago St., Madison, Wisconsin. The opening will run from 5-9 p.m. and is in conjunction with the local Spring Gallery Night.

Refreshments will be served, and Kain will be available to talk about her art.

Kain will be showing her recent hand-painted linoleum prints that explode with color and patterns. The exhibit will remain up until June 1.

Bare Knuckle Arts is a working visual arts studio in Madison that is owned by Amy Mietzel ’91, who majored in art at Ripon College.

Kain is a retired art history professor from Ripon College. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna, Austria, and made her career teaching art history from cave paintings to cathedrals to contemporary art at Ripon College. Her images are inspired by a wide span of art but especially by early modern expressionism.

Her watercolored linoleum prints transform landscapes, interiors and still lifes into patterns and color. She carves into rectangles of linoleum, inks and prints them by hand in small editions. Each print then is individually watercolored. This patterning and coloring process gives otherwise ordinary motives a special intensity.
