Students accepted for summer, graduate school opportunities
Numerous students who have been working with Student Support Services (SSS) this year have achieved academically and been accepted into summer programs and opportunities and graduate school programs.
They have worked with SSS to discuss connecting their degrees to various career directions, submit application statements for editing and coordinated to receive guidance and strong recommendations from faculty members.
- Morgan Devine ’21 of Colby, Wisconsin, who graduated with a degree in psychology and a minor in criminal justice, has accepted an offer from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, to study for a master’s degree in clinical mental health. In preparation for graduate school, she was selected to the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) GSEF-Graduate School Exploration Fellowship program, which offered a compensated summer research experience at a Big Ten university in summer 2020. Only two students from each ACM school typically are accepted to the GSEF program.
- Guadalupe Aviles ’22 of Wichita Falls, Texas, is majoring in Spanish with a minor in studio art. She has been accepted for a summer research position through the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Summer Research Opportunity program. She will undertake research and study in Spanish literature and language.
- Ben Georgia ’21 of Green Bay, Wisconsin, who graduated with a degree in chemistry-biology, will be working in a summer internship at the Center for Community Health through Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. He also has been accepted into the School of Nursing at DePaul University in Chicago to study for a master’s degree in nursing.
- Tori Braun ’21 of Juneau, Wisconsin, who graduated with a degree in mathematics and a minor in educational studies, will be attending the University of Minnesota to study for a Ph.D. in mathematics. She previously completed summer research programs in mathematics through Kansas State and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
- Shannon Sorbo ’21 of Nekoosa, Wisconsin, who graduated with a degree in exercise science-sports management and a minor in business management, will be attending Florida State University to study for a master’s degree in sports management.
- Julia Scharinger ’23 of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is majoring in biology. She has been accepted an internship at a major physical therapy, sports and wellness clinic in the Fox River Valley area of Wisconsin. The placement will emphasize learning about physical therapy techniques for rehabilitation and treatment of injuries.
- Valerie Doornbos ’21 of Allendale, Michigan, who graduated with degrees in environmental studies and history and a minor in Spanish, has been accepted to the University of Oklahoma in Norman to study for a master’s degree in geography and environmental sustainability. She previously had completed summer research positions at Penn State University in wind energy and the University of Illinois-Chicago in environmental ecosystem mapping.
- Alexis Riggs ’21 of Ripon, Wisconsin, who graduated with a degree in anthropology and a minor in sociology, will be attending the University of Wisconsin in Madison to study for a master’s degree in clinical and rehabilitation counseling through the School of Education. She has focused academic research on several areas related to accommodations for people with disabilities and working in an organization offering opportunities for people in the disability community.
- Lili Alderson ’23 of Ripon, Wisconsin, is majoring in history and communication with a minor in museum studies. She has been accepted into a compensated summer research program through the University of Michigan. The position will offer a research component, mentorship from current graduate students and discussions with other undergraduate students from across the country in preparation for future graduate school work.
- Abigail Maas ’22 of Appleton, Wisconsin, is majoring in psychology and English. She will participate in a paid summer research experience through Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana) as part of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest and the Mellon Foundation Graduate School Exploration Fellowship (GSEF) program. She previously completed independent study on the COVID-19 in the summer of 2020.
- Cierra Boutelle ’21 of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, who graduated with a degree in exercise science-athletic training and minors in psychology and strength and conditioning, will study for a master’s degree in athletic training at UW-Oshkosh.
- Natalie Davies ’24 of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, is majoring in biology. She will have a paid summer research project through the Ripon College Department of Biology under the mentorship of Associate Professor Memuna Khan. Khan has a particular interest and expertise in various aspects of bird biology.
