Camrie Schmitz ’21 repeats Ripon success with winning sociology paper

Camrie Schmitz ’21 of Kiel, Wisconsin, received first place in the 2020 undergraduate paper competition of the Wisconsin Sociological Association.

Schmitz won for her Senior Seminar paper, “Who Am I?: Strategies of Maintaining Identity Among Elders.” Jacqueline Clark, professor of sociology, served as her faculty advisor.

Many previous sociology students have been recognized for undergraduate sociology work by the WSA over the years. In 2019, Riley Erickson ’19 of Nekoosa, Wisconsin, and Raynard Tjahaja ’19 of Jabotabek, Indonesia, placed. Among additional past winners are: Spencer Lameka ’12 of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Michael Cacciotti ’13 of Manhattan, Kansas; Sam Carbajal ’13 of El Paso, Texas; Jena Roscizewski Cluka ’13 of Racine, Wisconsin; Kevin Carli ’14 of River Grove, Illinois; Amanda Detlor ’14 of Hancock, Wisconsin; Holly Kortemeier ’15 of Stoughton, Wisconsin; Kyle Novack ’15 of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; and Patrick Hoffman ’18 of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

“Camrie’s accomplishment, along those of the College’s past paper competition winners, represents the stellar work accomplished by students in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology,” Clark says.

Schmitz majored in sociology and anthropology.
