2023-2024 Chamber Music and Jazz at Ripon series to feature variety of world-class musicians

The 2023-2024 Chamber Music and Jazz at Ripon series will feature world-class musicians in jazz, classical, folk and beyond. All events are free and open to the public because of generous support from Ripon College’s Friends of the Arts.

All performances will begin at 7 p.m. in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts.

Hannah & Peter RyanFriday, Sept. 15: The Lynn Post Northrop Memorial Concert will feature a husband-and-wife duo, Hannah Ryan, soprano, and Peter Ryan, piano. Both teach at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVA Wise). Hannah Ryan maintains an active career both in the United States and abroad; and Peter Ryan’s collaborative and solo performances regularly highlight his passion for amplifying both underperformed works and voices of underrepresented composers.
2 Yid ViciousFriday, Sept. 29: Yid Vicious, an award-winning Midwest band, offers a unique blend of traditional and contemporary Yiddish folk music. The band was formed in 1995 “in order to ameliorate the woeful dearth of klezmer in America’s otherwise pleasant heartland."A pre-concert talk will begin at 6:15 p.m.
Lenard Simpson Quartet Plays at FSCFriday, Feb. 16, 2024: Lenard Simpson Quartet. Originally hailing from Milwaukee, Lenard Simpson is a saxophonist, composer and educator with a musicianship and unique sound celebrated as “profound soulfulness combined with a sparkling intelligence and curiosity” (Billy Childs). Regularly recognized as a rising star among his contemporaries, Simpson and his ensembles are increasingly in demand at premier clubs and jazz festivals throughout the Midwest. Quartet members are Lenard Simpson, saxophone; Runere Brooks, bass; Julius Tucker, piano; and Samuel Jewell, drums.
Brandi Berry Benson & Stephanie HuntFriday, March 1, 2024: Brandi Berry Benson, violin, and Stephanie Hunt, cello. Baroque violinist and Bluegrass fiddler Brandi Berry Benson’s “four-string acrobatics” and “indispensable skill” (TimeOut Chicago) have been praised as “bright”, “lively”, “pleasing” (Hyde Park Herald) “alert (and) outstanding” (Chicago Classical Review).In this program, violin will be met with the versatile Stephanie Hunt on cello, continuing the glow from the duo’s recently released “Silver Linings,” an album featuring a mix of Baroque and bluegrass music in the form of suites, preludes and new fiddle tunes. Their recent work also has included a Chickasaw suite based on the melodies of the Chickasaw Nation, of which Benson is a member.
