Coming-of-age drama opens theatre season Oct. 19-22
The Ripon College Department of Theatre opens its 2023-24 season with “The Wolves,” a coming-of-age drama by Sarah DeLappe about a pack of high school soccer players striving to fit in. The show runs Thursday, Oct. 19, through Sunday, Oct. 22.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Benstead Theatre, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts. Tickets are free.
In the play, the soccer players are on an indoor training field warming up for a series of games leading up to the national competition. The girls wrestle with their identity, sometimes sacrificing their morals for popularity. They compete with each other for social clout and the attention of college talent scouts. However, when tragedy strikes, this team must figure out how to reconcile their differences and play the game as a team.
The 2016 play premiered off-Broadway in September 2016. It received the American Playwriting Foundation’s inaugural Relentless Award in 2015 and the 2017 Obie Award for Ensemble work, was a New York Times Critic’s Pick and a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. It also was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, whose committee wrote: “For a timely play about a girls’ high school soccer team that illuminates with the unmistakable ping of reality the way young selves are formed when innate character clashes with external challenges.”
The Economist reviewer wrote: “She has penned an absorbing portrait of female adolescence in ‘The Wolves’”; and the New York Times reviewer wrote: “Girl power is atomic in ‘The Wolves,’ the incandescent portrait of an indoor soccer team. … The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured first play by Sarah DeLappe. …”
