Impact of big money on elections to be discussed Nov. 14 at Ripon College
“How to Limit the Impact of Big Money on Our Elections,” featuring George Penn of Wisconsin United to Amend, will be presented Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Ripon College. The Center for Politics and the People presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall, on the campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
Penn will give a short presentation; followed by a discussion between Penn and Henrik Schatzinger, professor of political science and director of the Center for Politics and the People; and a question-and-answer session.
Wisconsin United to Amend (WIUTA) is a cross-partisan state network dedicated to restoring our representative democracy by minimizing the corruptive influence that money has on our political process.
“We seek to overturn Citizens United and related Supreme Court decisions so we may reclaim the liberties and privileges guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution for real people,” the organization states. “Over 840 communities across the U.S. have already passed resolutions calling for a constitutional amendment, including over 160 governments in Wisconsin and 22 state legislatures.”
Penn grew up in Madison and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He joined Wisconsin United to Amend in 2012, working on the ratification of the 28th Amendment to get big money out of politics.
After Wisconsin United to Amend became a chapter of American Promise, Penn began to train other chapter leaders in activist incubation and lobbying strategies with American Promise. He has helped pass more than 130 resolutions across the state and has worked nationally with American Promise to support of the 28th Amendment movement.
