Mark Franzen ’83 to begin term as chair of the Ripon College Board of Trustees
Mark Franzen ’83 of Paradise Valley, Arizona, and Green Lake, Wisconsin, will begin his term as the new chair of the Ripon College Board of Trustees at the February board meeting. Since joining the board in 2010, Franzen has held numerous leadership positions including chair of the Committee on Academic Affairs, Board secretary and membership on the Executive Committee since 2016.
Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Franzen double majored in physics and mathematics with a minor in computer science while at Ripon. He also played basketball and was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. Upon graduation, he went on to receive his M.S. and Ph.D. in mathematics from Northwestern University.
Franzen retired in 2021 as the managing director of Milliman IntelliScript (formerly IntelRx). IntelliScript is the leading provider of risk assessment software for the U.S. life and health insurance sectors. He joined Milliman when the firm acquired IntelRx in April 2005. He had been CEO of IntelRx since he co-founded it in 2001.
Formerly, he served as CEO of Infotrust, a healthcare technology and services company; in actuarial and division financial officer roles with Trustmark; and was a math professor at the University of California-Los Angeles.
With his wife, Janice Heinz Franzen ’83, he has supported numerous major initiatives at Ripon College, including the Franzen Center for Academic Success, the Franzen Student Research Fund, and the Franzen Professorship in Applied Mathematics. Most recently, he and his wife were lead donors for the current renovation and expansion of the Franzen Science Center, which broke ground in April 2023 and is expected to be completed late this year.
When asked about his commitment to Ripon, Franzen reflected, “Ripon was so instrumental in shaping my life — I want to give back. Smaller colleges don’t have the resources bigger schools do. All of us associated with Ripon College have the responsibility to contribute as best we can.”
President Victoria N. Folse says, “I am thankful for Mark’s continued guidance and generosity, and I am eager to work closely with him in his enhanced leadership role as board chair. Mark embodies the energy and commitment to Ripon College that so many of our alumni and Trustees display. I’m excited to collaborate with Mark to impact the College’s future.”
