Ripon College’s theatre department to present “The Thin Place” Nov. 6-9

RIPON, Wisconsin – Ripon College’s theatre department is putting on the play “The Thin Place” by Lucas Hnath in the Benstead Theatre in the C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts Nov. 6-9, with doors opening at 7 p.m. for daily 7:30 p.m. showtimes.

“I only pick plays that I am completely riveted by,” Assistant Professor of Theatre Lillian Brown said. “Lucas Hnath is truly a brilliant playwright. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, he recontextualizes things and surprises you with situations you never could have imagined.”

“The Thin Place” is about a woman named Hilda who has been trying to make contact with the supernatural world since she was a little girl. She insists that she has found a “thin place” – a location where the boundary between this world and the next is particularly porous.

She was never sure if the things she could hear were real until she met Linda, a professional psychic, who can talk to the dead. As their friendship deepens, Linda reveals some uncomfortable truths. This fuels strange encounters with family and friends, leading to massive tension and conflict.

This cunning new ghost story challenges conventional perceptions of reality, magic and the supernatural. It questions ideas about the existence of an afterlife and how individuals might communicate with the deceased.

“Each role has substantial weight to it,” Brown said. “I love that this play has challenged our students to aim for things that feel slightly out of reach. This play posed a lot of challenges that we’ve had to think about creatively and collaboratively.”

Admission is free and open to the public. For reservations, email [email protected].
