Jacob Smasal

Distinguished Educator Award Recipient Jacob Smasal has been a social studies teacher at the Oshkosh West School District in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for 7 years, where he has made a lasting impact on students both inside and beyond the classroom. A dedicated student mentor and leader, Mr. Smasal has guided countless students through meaningful academic and extracurricular experiences, including his leadership of the school’s Mock Trial Team. He has also demonstrated innovation and compassion in his teaching by piloting a successful new course designed to support refugee and newly arrived students as they transition into their academic community.

Mr. Smasal earned his bachelor’s degree in history education from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His passion for teaching and student well-being is reflected in the nomination submitted by Brianna Young ‘26. Having experienced his teaching both as a high school student and as an undergraduate completing clinical observation hours, Bri witnessed firsthand Mr. Smasal’s unwavering dedication to academic excellence and the individual well-being of every student. While many educators influenced her time at Oshkosh West, Mr. Smasal left a lasting impression not only on her educational journey but also on her personal growth and understanding of what meaningful, student-centered education looks like.
