Soo Yin Brown’s Barcelona Journey

I have always been interested in studying abroad since high school when I would meet students from the exchange programs. When Ripon advertised their study abroad program and I attended several information sessions, I saw it as an exciting opportunity that would push me out of my comfort zone. I have always been an anxious person who tends to stay within my familiar routine, but travelling the world has always been one of my dreams. I saw studying abroad as an opportunity to challenge myself and become more independent in a completely different culture. When I first arrived in Spain I was extremely anxious and homesick, I was unsure of how I would adjust to living so far away from home. However, as I went out and started immersing myself into the new culture and meeting new people, I began to feel more comfortable in Barcelona. One of my favorite experiences was visiting Valencia with my family when they came to visit me. It was amazing to explore a new city together, and I was proud to show them how much I had grown. I was able to confidently navigate transportation and plan activities in ways I never thought I could before studying abroad. One of the biggest challenges during my time abroad was learning how to balance traveling with academics. My friends and I wanted to take advantage of every opportunity to explore Europe, but we realized that we still had to time manage our coursework. Through this experience, I learned important time management skills and how to make the most of my time abroad while still staying on top of my schoolwork. Outside of classes I was able to travel to seven different countries and explore many different areas of Barcelona. Over time, I became comfortable living in Barcelona and I no longer relied heavily on Google Maps. The cultural activities provided by BSAE also helped me adjust to the city and better understand Spanish culture. Studying abroad shaped me most in a personal way. Before this experience, I had rarely travelled far from home and often depended on familiar routines and the people around me. Living abroad forced me to become more independent and confident in myself. It pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and taught me that I am capable of much more than I originally believed. I would encourage those thinking about studying abroad to take advantage of the opportunity. Although the cost can seem intimidating, the scholarships that Ripon includes in their information packets help make the experience much more affordable. Studying abroad offers personal growth and opportunities that are difficult to find, and the skills and memories gained from the experience will stay with you for life.
