Three seniors receive awards for their work in visual arts

Three Ripon College seniors will receive Award of Merit prizes from the NE Chapter of Wisconsin Visual Artists. Sara Strieter, Tara Schultz and Alexandria Wilber will receive their awards Friday.

Strieter has a major in studio art and a minor in anthropology. She is from Nashotah, Wisconsin, and works in painting, graphite sketching, and carving. Her refined and well-crafted artwork reflects a fierce pride in her Native American identity.

She began making commissioned paintings in high school and has continued taking on more ambitious works during her years at Ripon. She has excellent technical skills in both two- and three-dimensional rendering combined with a strong motivation to create work that is personally and culturally significant.

Schultz has a major in studio art and a minor in psychology. She is from Ripon, Wisconsin, and works primarily in painting. Her artwork is invested with an understanding of the currents of modernist and contemporary abstract painting. Her current research revolves around light and darkness in painting.

She is a managing director of 314: Ripon College Project Space in downtown Ripon. She has participated in internships at the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts in Fond du Lac and MOWA in West Bend. She had a solo show this winter at the Fond du Lac Public Library, and she is planning a career in arts management.

Wilber is double-majoring in studio art and English. She is from Navarino, Wisconsin, and works in painting and drawing. She researches and responds to feminist thought and practice in her drawings and paintings. Her imagery is a personal and symbolic response to this inquiry.

She is a managing director of 314: Ripon College Project Space, where she has organized and juried community exhibits as well as created marketing and promotional materials. She has worked at the James May Gallery in Algoma.

The Wisconsin Visual Artists (WVA) prize consists of a gift of $100 and a year’s membership in the organization. WVA is a not-for-profit membership-based organization made up of visual artists working in a wide variety of media along with supporters of Wisconsin Art. It is united to advance opportunities and services for artists and the general public. It is committed to the importance and value of art and its creation in our society.
