Artist to Speak at Opening Reception
Artist Deb Kupinsky will give an artist talk at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the lobby of Rodman Center for the Arts on the Ripon College campus. The talk will be in conjunction with an opening reception in Caestecker Gallery for the exhibit, “Echo,” which will run through March 1.
Kupinsky is Uihlein Fellow in Studio Art, Ceramics and Foundations, at Lawrence University in Appleton. She describes her work as objects and images that explore “the interior lives and narratives that lie hidden beneath the surface of every day experience.”
She adds: “My work investigates the role of objects and images as carriers of meaning and how they relate ideas and emotions that cannot be expressed in words. Through the exploration of the subconscious and the narratives that lie beneath the surface of everyday life, I hope to both understand my own experiences and connect to the experiences of others. The figure allows me to get at these ideas and emotions by acting as a proxy for the self that becomes layered with meaning when overlapped and embedded with other objects and images.
“I am ultimately interested in how we reconcile beauty with loss and am especially drawn to what I call objects of nostalgia like thimbles, teacups and pill boxes that can be interpreted as symbolic for innocence. My work often explores the figure in relationship to landscape and the role of these objects in the mediation of memory, selfhood and the subconscious. These codes of meaning are open to interpretation and leave space for the viewer to insert their own narratives, memories and associations.”
Kupinsky has had solo and two-person exhibitions on college and university campuses around the country and in contemporary ceramic exhibitions in Jingdezhen, China. More information and photos about her work can be found on her website.
