‘A Doll’s House’ performed in modern setting

Henrik Ibsen’s modern theatrical masterpiece, “A Doll’s House,” will be presented by the Ripon College Theatre Department from Wednesday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, March 2, at Benstead Theatre on the Ripon College campus.

Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets are free, but reservations are recommended by calling 748-8791.

In this play that shook the world, the setting has been moved from 1879 Norway to 1961 America in a beautiful new staging of the play that began modern theater. On Christmas Eve, the Helmer family looks like the perfect, young family, but beneath the yuletide glow are dark secrets, blackmail and frustration.

Playing the lead role of Nora is Jessie Lillis ’13 of Coldwater, Mich. Also appearing in the production are Stephen Umhoefer ’15 of Green Bay, Wis.; JoHanna Burton ’13 of Elkhorn, Wis.; Carl Meisner ’16 of Minnetonka, Minn.; Casey Simonson ’13 of Mound, Minn.; Kally Gagnon ’14 of Mount Horeb, Wis.; JaneMarie Erickson ’16 of Redgranite, Wis.; Josh Pilla ’16 of Marine on St. Croix, Minn.; Madeline Whitehead, 7, daughter of Adjunct Instructor of Anthropology Bill Whitehead and Associate Professor of Anthropology Emily Stovel; and Liam Dalziel, 4, son of Assistant Professor of Theatre John Dalziel and Amber Dalziel.

The play is directed by Professor of Theatre Kenneth Hill, with assistance from Professor of Theatre Robert Amsden, Assistant Professor John Dalziel, and Adjunct Professor Susan McDaniel Hill.

“In this production, the world of Ibsen meets the world of ‘Mad Men,’ ” Hill says. “Setting the play in 1961 lets us see the troubles and triumphs of the play in a modern light.”
