Ethics Bowl Team Finishes Top 8 Nationally

The Ripon College Ethics Bowl Team advanced to the National Quarterfinals at the 17th Annual Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. The Ethics Bowl Team finished the event ranked in the top eight in the country. Team members included Kyle Ruedinger ‘13, Ariel Berres-Green ‘13, Amy Reuling ‘13, Paul Meuer ‘13 and Sophia Kaounas ‘12. They were coached by Lindsay Blumer, Director of the Ethical Leadership Program and Office of Community Engagement and Deano Pape, Director of Forensics and Assistant Professor of Communication.

The National Ethics Bowl is sponsored by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) Annual Conference and ran February 27-March 1. Thirty-two teams competed in this year’s National Tournament after qualifying in one of ten national regions.

Ripon College faced Villanova University in Round 1 and won 151-139. The questions posed included: “Are doctors morally obligated to pass along all information gained from pre-natal testing to the parents of the unborn child?” and “Should there be more stringent laws protecting disputed works of art from legal claims?”

In Round 2 the Ripon College team tied Samford College 142-142. Questions in this round included: “Are the hunting practices [of rare/exotic ranch-bred animals] morally permissible?” and “By involving a food blogger in a deceptive taste test did the company in question do anything unethical?”

Round 3 saw the Ripon College team win against St. Mary’s College of Maryland, 148-136. Round 3 questions included: “Are laws that allow unlimited donations to super-PACs ethical?” and “Are geo-engineering projects [such as SPICE] morally permissible?”

In the Quarterfinal Round Ripon College faced DePauw University and lost in a close match 148-154. Questions included: “What obligations, if any, do public figures have to the general public and members of the community in which they live when making offensive remarks?” and “What obligation does the fashion industry have to promote a healthy body image?”

DePauw went on to win the 17th Annual National Ethics Bowl.

The Ethics Bowl team will be featured during a Golden Hour Showcase on Tuesday, March 26th at 11:15 a.m. in Todd Wehr 104.
