Ripon College Named to 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

honorroll_logoRipon College joins a prestigious list of colleges and universities named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Each year, the President of the United States recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and civic engagement, and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. Honor Roll members were formally announced on Monday, March 4, during the American Council on Education’s annual conference in Washington, D.C.

A total of 690 higher education institutions were named to this year’s Honor Roll. Combined, the Honor Roll awardees engaged 3.1 million students in community service for a total of 118 million service hours. That’s 2.5 billion dollars in value to communities across the country.

Ripon College successfully applied for recognition in the category of “General Community Service,” which reflects the best practices of community service and service learning, such as long-term campus-community partnerships and measurable community outcomes as a result of the service.

In the College’s application, Director of the Office of Community Engagement & Ethical Leadership Program Lindsay Blumer wrote:

“Through the Office of Community Engagement students begin a journey of finding where their service fits into a community and how they must first attempt to be in the service of life rather than fit their own ideas of ‘help’ into a community with unique and diverse needs.

“By combining an excellent liberal education with a culture of service, Ripon College has set the stage for continued stewardship to our community and the world at large. Social responsibility and service are proclaimed in the College’s mission statement and defined in our strategic initiatives. Through this we hope to leave this world a little better than we found it.”

Some 980 Ripon College students engaged in community service in FY2012, logging a grand total of 5,840 community service hours. To learn more about Ripon’s commitment to service, visit the Center for Social Responsibility page here.
