Professors, Students Present Research at WSA/WPSA Conference
Faculty and students from the Ripon College Politics and Government Department and the Sociology Department presented nine research papers at the joint annual meeting of the Wisconsin Sociological Association (WSA) and the Wisconsin Political Science Association (WPSA) on October 11, 2013.
Marty Farrell, professor of Politics and Government, contributed two papers, “From the Sublime to the Ridiculous: Lessons Learned from 30-Plus Years of Taking Students Abroad,” and “Shattered Visions: Recent Global Political Economy with a Particular Focus on the Future of the European Idea.” Henrik Schatzinger, assistant professor of Politics and Government, discussed his paper: “Lobbying and Its Effects on Federal Procurement: Specific Targets, Tangible Results,” co-authored with Ripon College student John Schmidt ’14.
Four other students in the Politics and Government Department also presented their recent research projects. Jacob Birenbaum ’14 discussed his content analysis on the positive and negative framing in talk radio. Abigail Quackenboss ’15 presented the results of a quasi-experiment on the effects of media’s perceived political ideology on emotions. Sophia Kaounas ’14 gave a presentation on combating North Korea with the great strategic triangle, while Nathaniel Davidson ’14 discussed how different levels of exposure to the incarceration system affect people’s support for the way prisons are currently run. Schatzinger supervised the work of Birenbaum, Quackenboss, and Davidson.
David Hutson, the ACM Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow in Sociology/Gender Studies, presented, “I Felt Glowing and Beautiful…and Big as a House!’: The Challenges and Benefits of Embodied Motherhood,” and assistant professor of Sociology Marc Eaton presented “Getting in the Spirit: Gender Performance Among Ghost Hunters.”
