Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble to Perform

Kurt DietrichThe Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts on the Ripon College campus.

Kurt Dietrich Professor of Music and Barbara Baldwin DeFrees Chair in the Performing Arts, will be conducting.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Featured will be Ralph Vaughan Williams’ classic composition for band, “Folk Song Suite,” based on folk songs Vaughan Williams collected in the British Isles. He then compiled and arranged the songs for concert band in the early 1920s, when the modern concert band was in its infancy.

Other selections will include Gardner Read’s musings on an American folk song, “Dunlap’s Creek”; a variety of dances scored for concert band: Johann Strauss’s “Emperor Waltz,” Malcolm Arnold’s “Sarabande and Polka” and Dimitri Shostakovich’s “Galop” (from his satirical stage work “Moscow, Cheremushky.”

Also to be performed are two recent original works for band, “Mother Earth (A Fanfare),” by David Maslanka, and “Sweet Like That,” by Christopher Theofanidis.
