Faculty recital will feature music of the Reformation Oct. 29

A faculty recital, “Music of the Reformation 1517-2017,” will be presented at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, at Ripon College. Admission is free and open to the public.

The performers will be Sarah Mahler Kraaz, professor of music and college organist, organ and piano; John C. Hughes, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, tenor; and Meghan Hilker, adjunct instructor of music, mezzo soprano.

Many selections are from larger works, and many are based on original chorales, showing how the Reformation spurred the creation of new texts and tunes for the Lutheran liturgy.

Selections include: “Vom Himmel hoch” (“From Heaven Above to Earth I Come”), by Heinrich Scheidemann; “Von Gott will ich nicht lassen” (“From God shall naught divide me”), by Dieterich Buxtehude; “Lobet den Herren, der zu Zion wohnet,” by Heinrich Schuetz; “Schmücke dich, O liebe Seele” (“Deck thyself, my Soul, with gladness”) and “Komm Heiliger Geist” (“Come, Holy Spirit”), by Johann Sebastian Bach; “Lobgesang,” and “Come Rest in the Lord” from “Elijah,” by Felix Mendelssohn; “O Gott, du frommer Gott” (“O God, thou faithful God”), by Dame Ethel Smyth; “Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her,” by Ernst Pepping; “Schmücke dich, O liebe Seele” and “Allein Gott in der Höh sei Her” (“All Glory be to God on High”), by Naji Hakim; and “The Strong-Tower-Postlude,” by Matthias Nagel.
