Chamber Singers will present concert Nov. 17

The Ripon College Chamber Singers will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, on the Ripon College campus. Admission to the concert is free.

The conductor is John C. Hughes, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities. He says the selections for the program offer light, beauty and solace in our current dark and violent times.

“From my perspective, we are living in incredibly difficult times, characterized by violence, division and a loss of the sense of the greater good,” Hughes says. “How can we cope with the persistent tragedies covered on the evening news night after night? Guided by this question, I chose to focus this concert on three pieces: ‘Go, Lovely Rose,’ ‘Õhtul’ and ‘The Peace of Wild Things.’”

“These works remind us of the beauty that lies in each of us, as well as all around us. For example, the text of ‘The Peace of Wild Things’ is by the great American poet Wendell Berry, who shares that “When despair for the world grows in me … I come into the peace of wild things. … For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”

Selections will include “Psallite Domino,” by William Byrd; “Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord,” by Kirke Mechem; “Bitten,” by C.P.E. Bach, with Professor of Music Sarah Mahler Kraaz on organ; “Come, Gentle Swains,” no. 12, from “Triumphs of Oriana,” by Michael Cavendish; madrigals by Emma Lou Diemer, with Maria Kaiser Dietrich on piano;

“Go, Lovely Rose,” by Eric H. Thiman; “Õhtul,” by Pärt Uusberg; “The Peace of Wild Things,” by Emily Feld; “Daemon Irrepit Callidus,” by György Orbán; and “Dúlamán,” by Michael McGlynn, with Bailey Jerrick ’20 of Shiocton, Wisconsin, as soloist.
