Dean of Faculty Ed Wingenbach quoted in published articles
Vice president and dean of faculty Ed Wingenbach was quoted in an article in the Feb. 12, 2018, edition of GW Hatchett, a student newspaper of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The article examined the benefits of scaling back large introductory lectures for freshmen students to smaller courses, vs. the expense of necessitating more faculty to hold such classes.
Wingenbach “said feedback for general education courses – which have been reduced from about 40 to 20 students in recent years – has been positive,” the article states. “Wingenbach said smaller class sizes allow students to develop mentor relationships with faculty – something unlikely to happen in a large lecture.”
“‘If first-year students are in small seminars, we are more likely to notice when they begin to struggle or to develop other problems, and can intervene directly and immediately,’ he said.”
The article also referenced “Beyond Box Checking,” published in January in Inside Higher Ed, an article which also featured comments Wingenbach made during a panel discussion at the annual meeting of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
