Two to receive Outstanding Young Alumni awards Friday

Ripon College will honor two recent graduates with its Outstanding Young Alumni Award at 5 p.m. Friday, June 22, in Great Hall, Harwood Memorial Union. Those to be awarded are Joshua D. Frey ’09 of Aberdeen, Maryland, and Rachel S. Resop ’08 of Washington, D.C.

The Outstanding Young Alumni Award recognizes and honors recent Ripon College graduate — graduates of the last 10 years — who, through personal efforts and commitment to the College and their communities, have distinguished themselves among their peers. Nominations may be made by members of the faculty, administration, individual alumni, and groups or alumni clubs through the Office of Constituent Engagement for presentation to the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

• Frey is a Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Strategic Planner for the U.S. Army. He has received master’s degrees from Troy University in Alabama and Webster University in Missouri.

  Frey has served as an Army Commissioned Officer for nine years in locations around the country and globe. He has received the Bronze Star Medal and the Department of Energy Secretary’s Achievement Award, and he recently was accepted to the Army’s Advanced Civil Schooling Program for completion of a master’s of science degree in nuclear engineering. He is also a member of several groups and societies, including the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout National Honor Society; American Physical Society; American Chemical Society; U.S Cavalry and Armor Association; and Chemical Corps Regimental Association.

  At Ripon, Frey was a member of ROTC, Sigma Pi Sigma honor society and Physics Fun Force.

• Resop is a postdoctoral researcher at George Washington University. She has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health for her research in developmental hematology, the study of blood and the effect of HIV on the immune system. Resop has worked internationally with the American Association of Immunologists, European Congress of Immunology and International AIDS Society. She has presented her research in Rome, Vienna, Malaysia and South Africa. She participated in a number of public service projects, including the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition, UCLA Mobile Clinic Project and California HIV/AIDS Research Project, and volunteered on medical/ service trips to Romania, Ghana and Central America. She completed a public policy fellowship with the American Association of Immunologists this year, advocating in Washington, D.C., for funding for biomedical research. She aspires to continue a career in global health research and policy.

  At Ripon, Resop was a member of the varsity soccer team and Beta Beta Beta and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies. She graduated summa cum laude with majors in biology and Spanish. She spent a semester abroad in Seville, Spain, as part of her major.
