Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble to perform Sunday
The Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble will present its fall concert Nov. 18. The concert will begin at 3:15 p.m. in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts. It will be free and open to the public.
The program will feature a variety of styles from different eras of band music. A centerpiece will be Ralph Vaughan Williams’s 1924 classic Folk Song Suite. From the classic era of American band music will be John Philip Sousa’s Manhattan Beach march. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein, the ensemble will perform transcriptions of two of his short works: “Almighty Father,” a chorale from his Mass, and “Danzon,” a dance from his ballet Fancy Free.
The rest of the program features diverse contemporary works: Wisconsin composer Larry Daehn’s lyrical With Quiet Courage; Frank Ticheli’s arrangement of the beloved folk song Shenandoah; the visceral, exciting Tempered Steel, by Charles Rochester Young; and Mark Camphouse’s heartfelt In Memoriam.
The ensemble is directed by Professor of Music Kurt Dietrich, and comprises Ripon College students and members of the community.
