Free public concert from composer residency will be held Aug. 4

“Voicing Our Humanity: The Music of Shawn Kirchner” will be the focus of a Composer Residency and final concert offered by the Green Lake Festival of Music on the Ripon College campus. The residency will be held Aug. 1-4 with singers from the local area and around the country.

The final concert will be performed free to the public at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts.

Kirchner will be in residence, and the choir will be conducted by Dr. John C. Hughes, Ripon College assistant professor of music and director of choral activities. A pre-concert conversation will begin at 2:45 p.m., and a reception will follow the concert.

Kirchner is a composer/arranger, singer/songwriter and pianist active in the music circles of Los Angeles. His choral works are performed throughout the world, and in 2012 he was appointed as the L.A. Master Chorale’s Swan Family Composer in Residence.

Kirchner has also collaborated with and/or written for many leading choral ensembles across the country, including Conspirare, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Lorelei Ensemble, San Diego Master Chorale, Los Robles Master Chorale, and the Atlanta Master Chorale.

Kirchner’s choral writing is informed by his interest in songwriting and folk/carol traditions on the one hand, and poetry on the other.

He sings with the L.A. Master Chorale and on the soundtracks of three dozen feature films including “Avatar,” “La La Land,” “Sing!,” “Ghostbusters,” “Minions,” “Jumanji,” “The Lorax” and the “X-Men” series.

The residency is sponsored by Justus Paul of Green Lake.
