Work by nine Ripon College student artists shown in Princeton gallery
“The Contemporary Portrait,” an exhibit featuring the work of nine Ripon College students, opens Saturday, Feb. 1, at Levee Contemporary Gallery in Princeton, Wisconsin. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will remain on view through Sunday, March 29.
The exhibit revolves around portraiture and how artists use the face and metaphors of identity to expand the definitions of what a portrait can be. “This is a unique opportunity for the students to exhibit and work with a commercial gallery space,” said Associate Professor of Art Rafael Francisco Salas.
The students researched portraiture through the lens of art history, science and personal engagement. Using various media, including charcoal, pastel, paper, photography, collage, mixed media sculpture and others, the students’ studio practice uncovered currents that have emerged in the portraiture of the 21st century.
Students with artwork in the exhibit are Emily Allard ’21 of Appleton, Wisconsin; Samuel Audisho ’20 of Adams, Wisconsin; Hayley Lynn Corkran ’21 of Ripon, Wisconsin; Heidi DeCaluwe ’20 of West Bend, Wisconsin; Halina Decker ’21 of St. Paul, Minnesota; Lucinda Izzo ’20 of Wautoma, Wisconsin; Brooklyn Landgraf ’21 of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Jessica Luhman ’20 of Barneveld, Wisconsin; and Allison R. Schloer ’20 of Park Falls, Wisconsin.
“We are delighted to be able to collaborate with Ripon College’s art department,” said gallery co-founder Shane Foreman. “It is exciting to be able to team up with students to show the community their artwork.”
Levee Contemporary Gallery is a commercial gallery and art space. Levee presents a diverse range of artists and artwork and gives the viewer the opportunity to engage with visual art on a socially conscious and publicly engaging level. More information is available by calling 920-393-8653.
