International student learns about U.S. elections with a CPP internship grant

Through an internship this summer, Hanan Majid ’22 worked with Nate Zimdars (D), who is running for the 41st district of the state assembly.

To help support the internship, Majid received a CPP Fellowship Grant for student interns in public policy or politics from the Center for Politics and the People at Ripon College.

His responsibilities included research, direct voter contact through calling, texting or email, data entry, event planning, volunteer recruitment and support, list building, and social media.

Majid is from Kashmir.

“I got to experience what it takes to run for a state assembly election,” Majid says. “It’s more complicated than one can imagine. You have to take care of small things which can become really big if not taken care of.

“Being an international student, I was always curious about how elections worked in the USA. This makes me more willing to learn about the American government which will defiantly help me with my goal of becoming a lawyer.”

At Ripon, Majid is majoring in psychology.
