Events recognize Women’s History Month

Several upcoming events continue the celebration of Women’s History Month at Ripon College, sponsored by Student Activities.

On Wednesday, March 11, the documentary film “Miss Representation” will be shown at 5:30 p.m. in the Dahm Heritage Room, S.N. Pickard Commons. Discussion will follow about the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America and the media’s limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman.

Licity Collins, who combines lecture and performance, will appear at 7 p.m. March 26 in Great Hall, Harwood Memorial Union. Collins tells personal stories of hopes, challenges and triumphs, and dreams planted, abandoned and recovered. She opens us to the parts of herself that were lost and recounts how they were found. Each song marks a moment in the journey with wisdom and lessons the audience can apply to their own lives. Pictures and lyrics add color and depth as we travel the road with Collins through song, story, truth, courage, playfulness and joy. This event is co-sponsored with the Dean of Faculty office.

On March 28, Kyshona Armstrong will perform at 7 p.m. in The Pub on campus. She performs a unique mix of rhythm and blues, soul and Gospel music. This event is cosponsored with SMAC.

Gently used prom dresses will be for sale to local high school students from noon to 5 p.m. in Great Hall. The Ripon College Panhellenic Council is accepting dresses of all sizes and lengths until March 27 in the Student Activities Office. Proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

“Why have we never had a woman president?: Perceptions of gender politics and the oval office” will be presented at noon March 30 in the Pickard Dining Room, S.N. Pickard Commons. Meg Carne, special assistant to the president and liaison to the board of trustees, will be the presenter.

“Real Talk: Perceptions of our Ripon Women” will be a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m. in the Dahm Heritage Room. Current students will discuss the perception of Ripon College women in an open and honest dialogue.
