Ripon College is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month through Oct. 15

The Ripon College Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), along with La Unida, is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month through Oct. 15.

The term Hispanic or Latinx refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. On the 2010 Census form, people of Spanish, Hispanic and/or Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or “another Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin.” Today, 55 million people or 17% of the American population are of Hispanic or Latinx.

To recognize the important presence and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture, CDI is joining in the national celebration with activities that include: film screenings; conversations and speakers, including Latinx Ripon College alumni via Zoom; edible treats; and a tea light vigil via Zoom to honor the life of U.S. Army soldier and Latina Vanessa Guillen who was murdered at Fort Hood, Texas.
