Artwork explores ‘possibility of materials’ in exhibit opening Friday

“Found,” an exhibit of work by artist Jessica O’Hearn, will be on view March 27 to April 26 in Caestecker Gallery, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts on the Ripon College. The artist will present a talk at 7 p.m. March 27, and an opening reception will follow.

After graduating from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University (now LUCAD) in 2006, O’Hearn completed the printer-training program at The Tamarind Institute of Lithography and returned to Boston to work as studio assistant and collaborative printer to Michael Mazur. In 2011, she began working at The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design as printmaking lab technician and foundations lecturer.

In July 2013 she accepted a position as Production Printer at The Segura Arts Studio at The University of Notre Dame.

O’Hearn’s use of materials stems from an interest in the relationship of landscape to architecture. “This work is based on an exploration of natural forms and the possibilities of materials,” she says. “I am interested in our relationship with the artificial and natural worlds and encouraging the viewer to question these relationships. Using man-made materials to emulate natural forms and patterns, I juxtapose elements of control with erratic forms. I am interested in how we comfort ourselves in the spaces we create and inhabit and creating calm through a chaotic state of mind.

“Process and materials play a large part in each piece. I choose materials that I cannot have complete control over; each piece is dependent on what the material is capable of doing. These works evoke recognition of our environment and the vulnerability of our daily life.”

Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and during evening performances.
