Brian Bockelman featured in online article about history graduates
Brian Bockelman, associate professor of history, is featured on a panel of experts in an article on zippia.com, published this month.
“Experts weigh in on current job market trends” addresses history graduates starting their careers in an uncertain economic climate.
“They will need critical thinking skills and an ability to adapt to new jobs, some of which have yet to be invented,” Bockelman says in the article. “In addition, they will need to be able to communicate well, both orally and in writing, to do basic research on any subject, and to use spreadsheets and presentation software to manage data and make arguments from it.”
He also says that technology is having an impact. “The rise of digital technologies in the humanities has changed both teaching and research in the field. For students looking to make a career out of history, the digital turn has invigorated public history projects and institutions. Jobs in this area are growing, even as more traditional teaching positions at high schools and colleges are becoming more competitive and, in some cases, declining. Students who take the time to learn some digital tools or information management systems alongside their historical studies are well-placed to enter public history careers.”
