Jazz Ensemble performs Friday, April 24

The Ripon College Jazz Ensemble, under the director of Professor of Music Kurt Dietrich, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 24. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Demmer Recital Hall, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, on the campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

Selections will include an eclectic mix of contemporary jazz. Among the composers represented will be Charles Mingus, Pat Metheny, Hank Levy and the late great Wisconsin composer Fred Sturm. The ensemble will also be premiering a new work by Wisconsin composer Paul Dietrich, who will be featured trumpet soloist on his work “Settle.”

Ripon College adjunct instructor of music Bill Nelson will be the featured saxophone soloist on Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays’ epic “The First Circle” and Alan Baylock’s new piece, “El Abrazo.”

The Jazz Improvisation group will play two contrasting works by Freddie Hubbard, “Little Sunflower” and “Povo.”

Trombone: Kathryn Bruhns ’16 of Oak Park, Illinois; Peter Crowell ’15 of Chicago, Illinois; Jeremiah Hargis ’15 of Elgin, Illinois; Lucas Henningsen ’15 of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; Sam Olson of Berlin, Wisconsin.
